Although I have worked in many media over the years, a turn of
fate in 1979 moved me to become a professional photographer. We
moved to Maine full time in 2000 and I gave up both my job and my
darkroom. I have now learned to work digitally and am discovering
the many ways the computer can help me have “fun” with
photography. This allows me to go beyond the document and find the
essence in a scene or situation.
I still threaten periodically to go back to some of the other media,
so beware!

Even though my paintings are traditional I believe they reflect my
background and interest in graphics, whether a simple still life or
an elaborate landscape.
A fleeting moment: a street scene, an object, the time of day,
something in nature right in my backyard. I have to capture it.
Painting is about emotion, study, thought and perseverance.
I find acrylics allow me to be freer with my brush strokes, use
bolder color, and allow for faster drying time.
Starting with a colored background on my canvas: sometimes orange  or
red, maybe even purple, gives more life to the painting and allows me
to capture my initial response: a fleeting moment.

Welch, Michael

Media: oils, watercolors, pastels and sculpture

Artist Statement: “I believe that the reason for painting (or drawing or sculpting) is embedded in the works themselves.  If I knew why, in words, I probably would not have to paint.” —Michael Welch

A Maine native, Michael paints his regular haunts at Biddeford Pool, Fuller Farm in Scarborough, Evans Notch, and the Saco River. This series embody his fascination with the interaction of color and how they relate to these Maine places.

I have followed two distinct and equally serious paths in my artwork, fine art (mostly watercolor, collage, acrylic, oil), and children’s illustration. My fine art subjects include landscape, still life, the figure and portraiture, Much of my work is said to lead the viewer into the realm of the interior, into  “caves, unfolding flowers, and through half opened doorways.”  I look beyond likenesses when it comes to portraits and figures, and sometimes extract connections: a small child and his father, a man and his saxophone,   and sometimes see irony:  the tender expression of a big old boxer dog, a demure and self-assured, collaged girl - melting.  My interpretation of subjects varies from finished realism to textured abstraction.
