maine coast, rocks and trees

Medium: oil and pastel
Artist Statement:

Much of my work is inspired by the unique and striking landscape I witness every day living here in coastal Maine. I am lucky enough to make a journey for several weeks every summer by boat along this extraordinary shoreline, during which time I get to sketch, paint, photograph and absorb the color, light and moods of the coast. I am particularly fascinated by what I call the ‘beauty of rocks’ with their subtle colors and endless formations, as well as all the other elements of the land and sea that have drawn artists for centuries.
I work in oils and pastels on site and from my own sketches and photographs.
Portrait , figure and still life are also part of my practice where I work exclusively from life. I would describe my style as bold and colorful, a mix of impressionistic and representational painting, with an eye to the abstract design.

Loughridge, Sally

Artist Statement:  I am very fortunate to live on the coast of Maine, with its dynamic intersections of sea, sky and land. I enjoy painting scenes depicting natural transitions, whether the gradual change of autumn colors or the sudden shift in light and shadow a rain squall brings.  Such variation heightens my perception, energy and emotional response. I work in soft pastel, oil and watercolor.   I have been teaching soft pastel painting for over eight years, both in the studio and en plein air. I continue to grow through long contented hours working on my own and painting regularly with a small group of close and critical peers. The process of making marks is challenging, humbling and deeply satisfying.

Artist Statement:  My current work is an exploration of the balance and harmony, as well as the impermanence, of natural forms. I am trying to hold up to view the fragile beauty found in humble things, to turn it around and examine its many facets.

It is about traveling to those “thin places” where the sacred breaks in on the ordinary. These studies are my meditations on these small epiphanies.

I have not hesitated to allow the world of intuition and dreams, the nudges of a force larger than myself, to assert herself into my efforts. She helps me break through the illusion of separateness, and stand in awe at the interconnectedness and the sacredness of all things.

Mizner, Kevin

Medium: Oil
Artist Statement:

Nature has many moods.  I want to convey a sense of nature at rest; the soft stroke of sunlight on a summer’s day, the serenity of a long, blue shadow on the snow or the rhythmic lapping of waves against the shore.  My goal is to portray these things with the colors of oil paint as honestly as I can, so the viewer may feel the emotion I felt when I witnessed the scene.

Kevin Mizner has been painting for over 30 years.  His award-winning paintings depict the natural beauty of Maine.  He has traveled the state from the coast to the inland, to portray scenes that focus the viewers’ attention on nature’s light and color.  Kevin is a self-taught artist, and has studied the work of many artists in museums around the world.  His influences range from Rembrandt and Vermeer, to Homer and Wyeth.

Kevin is a native Mainer, having grown up in the rural town of North Yarmouth.  After a four-year enlistment in the United States Air Force, he moved back to Maine to raise his family.  Kevin currently resides in Pittston, Maine.

Monsell, Ruth

Beachcomber Boy by Ruth Monsell

Medium: oil, pastel, charcoal

I find people my favorite subjects for painting, as the many portrait commissions I fulfill reflect.  In my latest series, I have painted children and adults on beaches.  I like the challenge of trying to capture sunlight and shadow, and the rhythm of wind and waves. My references were photos taken along the coasts of several states and in Canada.

beach oil painting by Lea Peterson

Medium: oils and pastels

Having spent many years in a stressful corporate work environment, Léa attempts to make of her art an oasis, where viewers can linger and refresh.  “Viewers tell me they feel both revitalized and soothed by my work.”

Léa typically works in her studio or “en plein air” about 8 hours a day, producing about 100 paintings a year. “A typical day starts in the early morning and ends when my energy finally wanes in the early evening”, she says. “I stay focused and avoid distraction—during that time, I am totally into my art.”

Her latest work is in oils, much of the subject matter drawn from the island of Monhegan where she spent time painting this fall. “I try to look for moments of extraordinary beauty in ordinary places,” said Léa. “When people look at my work, I want it to strike a chord -- surface a positive memory or emotion, and in some way resonate with and reinforce something good in their lives.”

Rankin, Denise

Medium: oil, acrylic

Artist Statement:

For me, painting is a way of recognizing the beauty of everyday things.  What I catch in my peripheral vision, what surprise still lifes I come across at home, what simple pleasures remind me to celebrate the small joys each day brings -- these are the inspirations for my paintings.   Humor and whimsy often creep in, and I often put in a surprise to reward to observant viewer. In this way, my relatively realistic style is enlivened by my offbeat subject matter.  As I work in oils or acrylics, I try to express how lucky we all are to have so much, to live so well, and to reside in such a beautiful place.
I've been painting in Maine for about 10 years.  Thanks to all who take a moment to look at my work.

Rice, Andy W.

swimming fish wood carving

Medium:  Wood Carving and Sculpture

Artist Statement :

As an artist and outdoorsman my goal is to preserve moments in wood, capturing form and realistic movement in fascinating wood grains. Each sculpture is hand carved from a type of wood that compliments the fish, bird or animal.  I sometimes use hardwoods not common to carving, such as birds eye maple, curly maple and cherry. I occasionally integrate natural forms, like driftwood, as the medium, enhancing what nature started. Balance between the beauty of the wood and subject are paramount to my focus.  The elements of the wood grain, proper application of detail and posture are utilized to represent the characteristics or tell a story of the species.
