French, Judine

Medium: watercolor

Artist Statement:

Judy French, formerly of Exeter, NH, now resides in Cumberland Foreside, Maine. She started painting in 2000 after retiring from 24 years in real estate and professional interior house painting.  Having the time to pursue artistic venues later in life has become very rewarding and great fun.  She finds the medium of watercolor, primarily landscapes, gives her the opportunity to express the bold artist that has always been within.  She has studied with Jan Kilburn and Doris Rice and has exhibited her works in various galleries and shows.  She is a member of Seacoast Artist Association, Boothbay Region Art Foundation and the Maine Art Gallery. Judy also enjoys decorating, gardening and boating on the Maine coast.

Over the Edge at Monhegan by Linda Gallion

Medium: pastels

Artist Statement:

Pastels are incredibly vibrant and energizing to paint with.  They are fun and messy and I feel like a child finger painting again.  I’m crazy about color and enjoy pushing it and playing with perspective with landscapes, objects, animals, and people.”

Linda has a Masters of Social work and became a licensed clinical social worker and later clinical director at a non profit agency in Topeka, Kansas.  She continues her work as a adult, child, and family therapist in Augusta, Maine.  Her husband Rick is a furniture maker and operates Gallion Woodworks.  She and her husband own and operate Clary Lake Bed and Breakfast in their home.

Linda joined the Pastel Painters of Maine and has attended several paint outs and sold a pieces in the Gallery, at art auctions at a paint outs.  She joined the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset three years ago and has had many of her pieces in the gallery, displayed at Damarcotta Grill, Portland Gallery, Pastel Painters of Maine exhibits, and will have a piece in Pastel Painters of Cape Cod juried exhibit in Jun 2010.

Artist Statement:

Down East and the Far East mix in my psyche and in my art.   I paint from a storehouse of childhood images and Eastern travels.

Each day I awake to seek images both of the past and of the present.   I sit still for long periods, remembering and observing, before my brush dares to touch paper.  I cannot resist the absolute joy derived from flowers, twisted trees, sea fog and mountain peaks. Experiencing these things overwhelms me.   I paint the wealth of nature and sometimes, I paint the things humans build so that they can live in nature’s realm.

I am drawn to the whiteness of negative space, the delicacy of balance, and the simplicity of a stroke.  I love the light-hearted ink-play of the brush on paper.

I am driven to capture the earth’s energies using the challenging media of traditional brushwork.

Art buoys my soul.   I want my work to speak of gentleness and a sense of infinity.
