FAQs

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions.

Q: The MAG exhibits policy states that members should submit only new pieces for the exhibits following the annual Visiting Jurors' exhibit. But I always submit what I think is my very best piece for the annual VJ show; if it's declined, then for sure it won't be seen at all in the same season. Is there some flexibility about this?

A: There sure is! At the annual Members' meeting on June 28, 2009 the members present and the Board voted to allow members to submit pieces that may have been declined for the VJ show for subsequent exhibits in the same season.

Q: What is the procedure for registering for workshops?

A: Because instructors make preparations for workshops, they need to know how many--if any--participants to expect. We ask that you contact the gallery office at the e-mail address or telephone number shown after the workshop descriptions on the right side of this page to pre-register. You may pay for the workshop at the beginning of the session; checks should be made out to the Maine Art Gallery.

Q: I know we are supposed to offer 2 pieces for each exhibit, except the Members' Exhibit, if we want to be assured that 3 of our pieces will be shown per season; but is there an upper limit? How many can I bring?

A: You may submit 3 pieces per exhibit (except the Members' Exhibit).

Q: If the artwork I have ready to submit for a show does not reflect the stated theme for a show, can I still submit it? Will it have the same chance to be juried in to the show?

A: Yes; artwork that reflects a stated theme will be hung separately in a specially designated area.

Q: What is the Maine Art Gallery's commission on artwork sold at the gallery?

A: 35%

Q: My painting is framed in a modern metal frame. How can I prepare it for hanging from ceiling moldings?

A: The metal eye holes located on the back sides of the frame, to which you normally attach picture wire, should be moveable with a screw driver. Loosen the eye holes and slide them up to the very top of the frame back, as far as they will go. That should do it.

Q: I would like to change the image of my painting that appears now on the "Member Artists" page of the MAG website. Can I do that? If so, how often can I change my image?

A: No problem! If your membership includes the option to have one of your chosen images on the "Member Artists" page, you may change your image once a month. When we update the website for each of the season's exhibits, we will also update the "Member Artists" page, as requested. Just let the office know by telephone or e-mail.
